Three lives were lost in a shooting on the beach at Fiesta Americana hotel in Cancun

Amidst Easter vacation, a shooting erupts in Cancun's popular beach area, leaving 3 men dead and authorities searching for answers.

This Monday, April 3, three men were shot dead after alleged gunmen fired at them in the middle of Cancun’s hotel zone, Quintana Roo. Currently, security forces are maintaining an operation in the area already guarded by police and the military. It is worth mentioning that the shooting occurred just at the beginning of the Easter vacation when thousands of tourists arrive at this destination to enjoy this holiday period.

According to initial reports, the events occurred on the beach of the Fiesta Americana hotel, and a security operation was deployed in the area. Still, so far, no one has been arrested for the homicide. According to the Attorney General’s Office of Quintana Roo, the facts are already being investigated. It is presumed that it could result from a confrontation between members of organized crime over drug sales.

Shooting in Cancun occurs during Easter Week.

The bodies of the three victims were located at kilometer 16.5 of Kukulcan Boulevard around 10:00 am, minutes before gunshots had been reported in the place, right next to the hotel, so emergency protocols were activated after receiving a 911 call.

The area where the three victims were located has been cordoned off, and authorities announced that they were lifeless at the time of the arrival of the emergency services, so the State Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation file to “clarify the facts and find the whereabouts of those responsible.”

Cancun has a travel alert from the US.

In the last few years, authorities of the Attorney General’s Office of Quintana Roo have announced that 2,750 homicides have been committed in the municipalities of Tulum, Solidaridad, and Benito Juarez, where the main hotel zones of the tourist destination are located and have highlighted that several of these crimes are linked to the sale of drugs.

Given these figures, US authorities issued a travel alert warning of the risks of vacationing on the beaches of Tulum and Playa del Carmen, especially for the Spring Break 2023 season, after two Canadian tourists were murdered in 2022, while in 2021, an Indian influencer and a German woman lost their lives in a crossfire during a confrontation between drug traffickers.
