During the National Convention of the Popular Party held in Seville, The former president of Spain, José María Aznar, took advantage of the moment to mock the origin of the name and surnames of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“Two hundred years since the anniversary of the independence of Mexico, congratulations. And now you change all things for me and say that Spain has to apologize: ‘And what is your name? My name is Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Andrés for the Aztecs; Manuel on the part of the Mayas; López is a mix, ”he said between laughter and applause from the audience.

The former Spanish president assured that he is not going to join “the ranks of those who ask for forgiveness” and affirmed that “the new communism there (Latin America) is called indigenism.”

In this age in which forgiveness is asked for everything, I am not going to join the ranks of those who ask for forgiveness, I am not going to do it“, He assured.

In defending hispanism, he warned that indigenism “can only go against Spain, not against the United States.”

“For defending the historical importance of the Spanish nation, the history of Spain – with its clear and dark, with its successes and its errors – I am willing to feel very proud, but I’m not going to ask for forgiveness“, He reiterated.

The former Spanish leader assured that the natives were “protected” by the Spanish laws of the Indies, at the time of affirming that “Hispanicity has to make us proud despite that black legend of the culture of cancellation, of that current stupidity with historical revisionism.”

As part of the celebrations for the 500 years of “indigenous resistance” and the 200 years of the Independence of Mexico, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent a letter to the Spanish government where he was invited to ask for forgiveness for the Spanish conquest.

However, Spain did not comply with his request, which is why the Mexican president described the Spanish government as “arrogant” by not wanting to offer an apology to the country’s indigenous peoples for the abuses committed during the conquest and the colony.
