Walmart tops annual list of Fortune Global 500 for the ninth consecutive year

Fortune released the Fortune Global 500 list for 2022, in which it ranks the world’s largest corporations by revenue for fiscal year 2021, where Walmart claimed the top spot for the ninth year in a rowand for the seventeenth time since 1995.

According to the new listing, Saudi Aramco (No. 6) proclaimed itself the most profitable company in the world, with $105 billion in profit.

China (including Hong Kong), recorded the most companies on the list with 136, one more than last year. Adding Taiwan, the total for Greater China is 145.

The United States, with 124 companies, is two above. In third place, Japan lost 6, for a total of 47.

For the first time, the aggregate revenue of Fortune Global 500 companies headquartered in Greater China (including Taiwan) exceeded the revenue of US companies on the listrepresenting 31% of the total.

“A rebound from the worst depths of the pandemic created a huge tailwind for the world’s largest companies by revenue”said Scott DeCarlo, editor of Fortune’s list. “Aggregate sales and profits hit record levels in fiscal 2021 for the Fortune Global 500. The Global 500 is the ultimate scorecard for business success and companies face another major test as they navigate several global economic hurdles in 2022.” .

Fortune Global 500 companies generated revenues totaling $37.8 trillionmore than a third of global GDP, up 19% from last year, marking the highest annual growth rate in the list’s 33-year history.

Cumulative earnings up 88% from last year to a record $3.1 billion. The companies on the 2022 list employ 69.6 million people worldwide and are headquartered in 229 cities and 33 countries and regions around the world. The number of women CEOs of Fortune Global 500 companies increased to 24 this year, from 23 last year.

Ranking data is based on 2021 company finance figures, when the world was starting to recover from Covid-19.

“This year has brought a whole new load of challenges… For businesses of all sizes, the real test will be who can survive and thrive in challenging conditions like these.especially if or when a recession of unknown length and depth takes hold,” said Alyson Shontell, editor-in-chief of Fortune.
