Washington Commanders Look to Be Under New Ownership Soon

Josh Harris acquires Washington Commanders for record $6.05B; Magic Johnson partners, team eyes future resurgence under new leadership.

Dan Snyder is no longer a member of the National Football League owner’s. The former Washington Commanders leader was part of a $6.05B sale on Thursday. The Commanders are now led by a private equity investor by the name of Josh Harris. One of the notable partners with the Josh Harris group is former NBA superstar Magic Johnson. Many note that Johnson is going to be in charge of trying to get the public relations of the franchise back on track.

World Record Price for the Franchise

The sale set a world record for the price of a sports franchise. The previous record was $5.3B as that was the Premier League club Chelsea. That was done in 2022. The biggest NFL price before this sale was the Denver Broncos, who sold for $4.65B last year. Unfortunately, the price of the organization does not change what the look of the playoff bracket NFL looks like, as both Washington and Denver have struggled to reach the postseason as of late.

The Sale Was Forced Across by the National Football League

The sale was forced across by the National Football League due to the long standing history of problems with Snyder. Snyder was also fined $60M as many issues were expressed about workplace complaints and litany over the past decade. The fine came after the league released a 23-page investigative report. Synder was the owner of the franchise for 24 years.

Been a Long History in Washington

This is just another strain in the history of the franchise. The team has been mostly poor on the field, and then they ran across the long-standing controversy over the team’s previous nickname. The organization is still in the middle of a controversy in their effort to get a new stadium built. It appears nothing will come easy for the organization.

The Team Has a Rich History

The organization has three NFL Championships to their name. The last time they won a title was in 1991. Before that, the organization won in 1982 and 1987. Washington has won the NFC five times, but once again, none since the 1991 season.  The organization has made the postseason 25 times in franchise history, with the most recent coming in 2020. The Redskins were one of the best teams during the years 1982-1992, as they made the postseason 8 times during that span.

The Team is Still in the Early Stages of a Rebuilding Process

The 2023 version of the Washington Commanders will get the season started on Sunday, September 10th. Washington is at home and are favorites against the Arizona Cardinals. The current betting odds for the game see the Washington Commanders at -6, with the total for the game at 40 points.

The Odds are Against Washington Again in 2023

The Commanders come in as major underdogs on the season. The Commanders are with a group of several others listed at +8000 to win it all. There are just three teams with worse odds, which include the Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans.

Rivera Still in Charge of the Football Team

The current Commanders squad is led by head coach Ron Rivera. He will have quite the challenge this season, as he starts the season with Sam Howell as his quarterback. After that, the Commanders will see a battle between Jacoby Brissett and Jake Fromm.

The Team Has Some Talent on Both Sides of the Ball

Brian Robinson Jr and Antonio Gibson should lead the charge at running back, with Robinson getting most of the workload on the ground and Gibson more in the passing game. Washington has a nice trio of receivers that are looking to push the needle to improve their games and the game of Howell. Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Curtis Samuel lead the charge.

On the defensive side, Chase Young will lead the way with Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, and Montez Sweat at the front. Washington will look to keep the ball in their hands as much as possible and will succeed mostly at low-scoring games in 2023.

The Future Looks Bright for the Washington Commanders

The new ownership group is committed to making the Commanders a winning team again. They have the resources to do it, and they have a good coach in Ron Rivera. If they can get the right quarterback in place, the Commanders could be a playoff team in the near future.

The new ownership group is led by Josh Harris, a private equity investor with a net worth of over $5 billion. Harris is a lifelong sports fan and has a strong track record of success in business. He is confident that he can turn the Commanders around and make them a contender again.

The Commanders are still a few pieces away from being a playoff team, but they have the potential to be a contender in the near future. If they can get the right quarterback in place, the Commanders could be a force to be reckoned with in the NFC.
