Wayne Rooney and his return to MLS: The spoiled child will return to lead a team in crisis

Former English soccer player Wayne Rooney, who played for DC United in the last stretch of his career, will return to this MLS team but to be his coach.

The Athletic portal assured this Sunday that Rooney and the group from the US capital have reached an agreement for him to sit on the bench and pointed out that the Englishman is already in Washington to finalize the final details.

The newspaper The Washington Post also maintained that there is already an agreement for Rooney to be the new coach of DC United.

In his MLS managerial debut, Rooney will have a difficult task with a team that is tied for last place in the Eastern Conference with the Chicago Fire and on Friday suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in its history in a 7-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union.

Chad Ashton was DC United’s interim coach since the April firing of Argentinian Hernán Losada.

Rooney resigned at the end of June as manager of Derby County after the team’s relegation to League One (English Third Division).

The Englishman arrived at Derby County in 2020, as a player-manager, and finally took over as coach to save the team last season.

This campaign’s point penalties ended up relegating the ‘Rams’ to League One in the midst of serious economic problems.

As a player, Rooney knows both MLS and DC United since he was the great figure and the captain of this team from 2018 to 2019.

In 48 regular season games for DC United, the forward scored 45 goals.
