The Sports Arbitration Court (TAS) reported this Tuesday that it approved the agreement between the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and FIFA, with which the match suspended for date 8 of the qualifiers between Brazil and Argentina will no longer be played.

The CBF said in a statement that “in the document, CAS/TAS supersedes previous decisions on the case and determines the cancellation of the match between Brazil and Argentina“, previously scheduled for September 2022.

The AFA and the CBF accepted their respective responsibilities for the events which gave rise to the suspension of the match, of which barely five minutes were played, as verified by the FIFA Judicial Bodies, and they will assume the corresponding sanction.

As both teams have already qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a mutually agreed resolution was reached, since none wanted to play it because it affected the preparation plans for the World Cup.

Thus, the AFA will have to pay a total fine of 150,000 Swiss francs ($158,000 dollars), half of which was suspended for a two-year trial period.

“Half of the fine to be paid (25% of the total fine) will be donated directly by AFA to the World Health Organization (WHO)in support of their ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19″, added the entity that governs soccer in Argentina in a press release.

The match, which was canceled and which generated the whole problem, was played on September 5, 2021 in Sao Paulo when five minutes into the game it was interrupted by Brazilian health authorities against alleged violations by the Argentine delegation of the restrictions that prevailed in the country as a result of the Covid pandemic.

According to the Brazilian authorities, four Argentine soccer players violated quarantine rules established at that time to travelers from the United Kingdom.

In April, FIFA had set the date for the new match on September 22, but later suggested with the AFA that the commitment not be made.

The dispute of the match does not alter the classification of the South American qualifierswhich ended with Brazil in the lead with 45 points and Argentina second with 39, eleven ahead of Uruguay, which finished third.
